The world will be watching

To anyone who knows me, it shouldn’t be surprising that I just quoted the Hunger Games. What might shock some people though is what I say next about things going on in the government this week.

First locally in Texas, there’s a bill in the state Congress that would put further restrictions on abortion after 20 weeks and various other restrictions just to over complicate things simply because Texas does that with actions we don’t like. The fact is, even with the filibustering by Dem. Wendy Davis, something is eventually going to pass and life goes on. On the other hand, abortions will most likely always be legal as long as we have the 2-party system in both state and federal Congresses. Until Roe vs. Wade becomes replaced (which will probably never happen), abortions will be legal and socially popular. It is a part of society’s ideology when it comes to women’s rights.

At the federal level, there is the Supreme Court ruling at the end of the week on whether or not gay marriage is constitutional. In all honesty, I’m sure it will pass because since there is not an official religion, we cannot rule out the legality which is based on logistics and maybe even ethics. The inevitability that gay marriage will pass is strong and those who oppose it really cannot stop it without becoming “narrow-minded” and “bigoted”. While I am confident in the passing of the legalism, I do not fully support it. I am fundamentally for anyone who wants to pursue happiness in any way possible, however as a Christian of the Southern Baptist denomination, I am against any idea not the one man-one woman marriage of the Bible. In the Bible, we are taught to love the sinner and hate the sin because we are all sinners. I may get called narrow-minded and a bigot, but I’ll at least stand for something.

“If you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything.” Malcolm X

I try to stay true to my beliefs while acknowledging the reality of modern society. As long as you don’t over exhibit your beliefs in a way which disturbs the peace, then I’m fine with people doing what they want if it makes them happy. After all, if there’s any motto we should collectively live by it is a simple one…

Don’t worry, be happy.”Bob Marley
